Before the roosters have sung their morning song in Leogone, Roseline is already awake.

Most days she doesn't eat any breakfast, but instead waits to eat at school. However, today she remembers a fresh mango waiting for her and her younger brother to share. She gets dressed in her school uniform and meticulously fixes her hair. Wiping away the dust that clings to her skin and shoes, she embodies the resilience of a young student determined to look her best at school today.

She boards the Lott Carey school bus that takes her to school where she heads to the courtyard to wait and chat with her friends about typical thirteen-year-old topics.

Half an hour later, the entire school stands still. The flag ceremony commences with students joining together to sing the national anthem. At 8 a.m., Pastor Saul, the principal of the school reads the daily announcements. Roseline and her classmates know it's time to line up behind their teacher and follow him to their classroom. Their morning is filled with English, French, Math, and Science. Some days she has music class, but not today.

Around noon her class is dismissed to go to lunch, so they stop by the well on the property to get a drink, wash their hands, and splash water on their faces. They go through the lunch line and receive a freshly prepared hot meal of rice, beans, onion sauce, and an orange slice. They walk back to the classroom to eat. Her teacher asks her to wash the blackboard after she’s done eating, and friends help tidy the classroom. School is dismissed after lunch, before the heat of the day rises. She boards the bus for a ride home, but not before she’s handed a bag of dry rice and cooking oil to take home for the weekend.

Rosaline spends the rest of the day working on homework in the shade of a tree in the courtyard area outside of her home. She works hard on her homework, because she plans to attend high school and become a teacher herself.

Introducing Adlene Feury, 2nd Grade Teacher at Lott Carey

Adlene Feury's love of teaching is clear when she describes her job and why she chose to become a teacher. Adlene loves teaching 2nd grade at Lott Carey School and working with children. She's been a teacher there for six years. She says that what she loves most about teaching is when her students finally understand what she's explaining to them. Watching students' eyes light up with understanding is a universal desire for any teacher. Something she finds most challenging is locating books and materials at times, so she can better work with the children.

Adlene is 28 years old, is not married, and resides with her sister. She asks for prayers for her well being and good economics.

She lives with her husband and one of her children. Prior to taking the cook position at Lott Carey, Enithe was a merchant. That line of work was challenging, and she didn't have enough money to continue selling items at the market. She is enjoying her job cooking for children at the school, and like serving them in this way. She does struggle with the heavy pots and pans, which can be problematic at times.

Starting school is such a right of passage, no matter where you are in the world. Lott Carey School is filled with preschool age children who are full of energy and eager to learn. Ms. Exilas Sirilia is an experienced teacher with over ten years of experience. She has been teaching preschool at Lott Carey for the past two years. Her classroom is PS3, which are 5 year olds, who have likely been in preschool for a couple years. Ms. Sirilia is 34 years old and resides with her mother and brother in Leogane. She is unmarried without children, and absolutely loves teaching. Originally from the island of Lagonave, Ms. Sirilia says she decided to become a teacher to help others learn. When she's not teaching she enjoys reading, writing, and learning languages. She is currently studying Spanish, and has an amazing optimism. She finds nothing challenging about teaching, because her love of what she does exceeds anything that may arise. She does ask for prayers for good health; it's important to her, and she struggles with getting sick. Thank you Ms. Sirilia for your dedication to teaching students at Lott Carey.

The cost of food in Haiti continues to rise, while the value of the gourde to the American dollar falls. Finding enough food each day is challenging, especially if children aren’t in school. Please help us make sure every student at Lott Carey gets a good, hot meal each day.

         Haiti Kids School Update

Social distancing is very important in Haiti. While the COVID-19 cases are low, many believe it is because they have a lack of testing. Therefore, there will be no more school for the children this year. We are very grateful for the continued support of donors and student sponsors, as we are able to still pay our teachers and staff and provide the children with food. The children are able to come at staggered times and throughout the day and get food to go. This is vital as many of their parents have little to no income. With a combination of a very depressed economy and many trying not to go out, the finances are very tight.

Thank you again for giving as we want to help the children get back to school in some way / right away in the fall.

School is currently not in session and will not resume this school year. Everyone is encouraged to social distance as much as possible to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Lott Carey School implemented a school feeding program to help get food to students. They are stopping by to pick up food.

         From Kelly Dunlap & Jan

Our introduction to Haiti came through our daughters. This is what warms our hearts the most. As cousins, our girls signed up for a high school ministry trip - one as a leader, the other as a student. We hoped this would grow their relationships both with God and one another. It turns out that this high school mission trip would plant a seed in our family that years later just continues to grow. The girls developed hearts for Haiti and they returned from the trip with a love for the people of Leogane and the children of Lott Carey, that they were eager to share.

After learning some lessons in trust and God’s timing, a year later we were able to experience Haiti firsthand as sisters, alongside our daughters. We were captivated by God’s presence in the country. The Haitians we met were people of great faith and tangible joy, despite the many obstacles and hardships they faced. It was our honor and pleasure to serve them and our time spent there was a true gift. We returned home sharing a love for Haiti with our daughters and committed to telling the story of our friends there whose struggles are real and needs are great.

As a family, we are able to sponsor some of the students we met and team up with the board of Haiti Kids School to find ways to offer continued support to our Haitian friends. A return trip was planned for March 2020 with additional family members in tow. It was to be an opportunity for three generations of us to serve alongside one another and we were excited about the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ. However, for a second time, God’s timing did not align with our scheduled itinerary and we were unable to make the trip. Sidelined again, our trust in God is unwavering and our resolve to return has been deepened. We remain here at home with great love in our hearts for our dear friends in Haiti.

Mr. Jimmy Ceser, one of our Math and Science teachers at Lott Carey, was in need of a new pair of glasses. He was able to get glasses and can now see beyond an arm’s length while teaching our students. Jimmy was born in Leogane and is married to his wife Josette Jean Louis who is a 1st grade teacher at Lott Carey as well. Together, they have a beautiful 9 month old baby girl.

We are excited to be leaning into our recent 501c3 status, which is allowing us more flexibility. We recently launched this new website where we'll highlight news from Haiti, videos, opportunities, and more. It will integrate with our new “behind the scenes” sponsor system that will allow us faster and more frequent updates from Haiti that we can share with sponsors. You can expect to hear more from our team about this in the weeks to come. We look forward to sharing photos and messages between students and their sponsors.

Our first “official” Facebook fundraiser was a huge success, raising $2,200 for Haiti Kids School. We love how simple and interactive social media is to engage with everyone who has a heart for Haiti.
